Hafan Y Coed Adult Mental Health Unit
Llandough HospitalThe building is located on the Llandough Hospital site in the Vale of Glamorgan. The inpatient accommodation provides in 135 single bed en-suite rooms providing privacy, dignity and security in a healing environment.
The completed mental health unit was the first mental health unit in Wales to incorporate principles of offsite manufacturing and modern methods of construction which benefitted from reduced programme, and waste and increase built quality.

The key principles of the project are:
- Evidence based design
- De-stigmatising mental health by locating the unit in the centre of the campus opposite the main entrance
- Each patient would have their own en-suite bedroom
- Natural materials and colours
- Progression of public, social, activity, private and semi-private spaces for patient needs
Environmental criteria include BREEAM “Excellent”, energy efficiency from airtightness values, reduced waste, use of renewable energy such as air sourced heat pumps and photovoltaic arrays.
