CHARTIST TOWER

Exciting project which transformed Newport’s tallest building into a four-star 160 bed hotel and new office space. The hotel consists of 160 bedrooms occupying 11 floors, retail units on the ground floor including in the former BHS store, 25,000 sq.ft. of Grade A office space.

Originally a 1960’s 16 storey office building constructed with a concrete frame with beam & terracotta pot floor construction. The existing façade consisted of cavity walls with a brick skin to each gable end wrapping around on to the main elevations. The central part of the main elevations was a series of concrete profiles with glazing and slate panels set between. The new façade is an insulated rainscreen screen cladding system using faceted 3D colour coated steel panels over the existing brickwork with the support frame being fixed back to the floor slabs through the brickwork. The glazing was replaced with a new glazing system with the slate panels being left in-situ behind. The concrete profiles were over clad with PPC metal flashings. The existing stone cladding on the lower levels was retained and cleaned.
