Bassaleg School

A Net Zero Carbon School for Newport CC bringing unification to the existing school site

A school whose ethos of inclusivity and wellbeing is central to its values. Bassaleg secondary school currently has 1,763 pupils with the demand for places predicted to increase to 2,050 in the near future. The authority identified the expansion of and improvements to the school as one of its main projects within its 21st Century Schools, Band B, and delivery programme and appointed Powell Dobson as architects to work with the school to create a a new building at the heart of the site which would respond to their culture and values. The new three storey teaching block located at the heart of the school not only provides the additional accommodation required to satisfy the demand for places, but also ensures the replacement of all the existing demountable classrooms and the partial demolition of dilapidated existing buildings.

  • Client Newport County Council
  • Completed Sept 2023
  • Contract Value £26m

The new central teaching block is designed to unify the school both physically and culturally, which historically operated two separate schools from within the campus. The layered approach to marrying curriculum with the school’s layout required detailed stakeholder engagement in regard to their Welsh Government Pathfinder project (which assessed the best methods of delivering the new curriculum for Wales), and the school’s exceptional approach to the wellbeing of pupils.

The new building has been sympathetically designed to complement the retained historic Forge Road grammar school facility, whose visible presence within the Bassaleg community has become a symbol of the school in its own right.

The campus has been masterplanned to facilitate future educational initiatives and the wider vibrant school community continue to access its extensive recreational facilities, which have been enhanced with floodlights and new pitches.

“The planned upgraded facilities will complement the innovative and expansive work being undertaken on our dynamic new curriculum and ensure that our pupils are thriving within a 21st century learning environment”

Victoria Lambe, Headteacher of Bassaleg School
