Adult and Older Person Mental Health Unit
Bodelwyddan, North WalesAs part of the NHS shared services building framework, Designed for Life 4, we were appointed as part of BAM’s design team to design a new build mental health unit on the existing campus at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd for Betsi Cadwalader University Health Board. The project is a new build 65 bed mental health unit consisting of 2 older persons functional and organic wards, 2 adult acute wards and an extra care ward. Support spaces include a café, reception, therapies, ECT department and flexible staff office accommodation.

The scheme will replace the old Ablett mental health unit and will provide single bedrooms and en-suites throughout. Principles of “designing for dementia” and generous space provision for assisted care have been incorporated in the older persons organic ward. The project has undergone extensive stakeholder engagement, to establish a tailored brief and carefully considered approach to gender separation privacy and dignity in a safe secure and therapeutic environment.
The project looks to incorporate concepts such as passive design, biophilic design principles, through building orientation, use of materials and outdoor spaces to create a healing environment and human scale. The project is designed to achieve BREEAM excellent and incorporate low carbon, passive environmental design principles.
