High quality public and private housing, urban design and place making for Channel View Estate in Cardiff

Mar 2020

Architectural practice Powell Dobson are delighted to announce that they have been appointed by Cardiff Council as lead architects of a design team on the exciting new masterplanning project for the regeneration of Channel View Estate.

The Channel View Estate sits in the very heart of Grangetown, one of the largest districts in the South of the city. The area is bordered by Riverside, Canton and Butetown and is a diverse and multi-cultural district.

Our team is looking forward to working in partnership with the existing community and the Council to deliver an ambitious and truly inspiring regeneration of the Channel View Estate.  – improving the environment for existing residents, creating a desirable, sustainable place to live whilst re-connecting it with the wider Grangetown community and beyond. As with all our projects, collaboration is something that we strive for and from experience it produces the best buildings and places. This means that community engagement will be at the heart of the design process as we develop a shared vision for Channel View that is sustainable, not just environmentally, but in terms of creating a ‘place’ that fosters a healthy, balanced and cohesive community.

Ann-Marie Smale MBE, managing director of Powell Dobson, said, "We are delighted to have secured such a fantastic project within our home city and we are looking forward to working with Cardiff Council to bring our shared vision for the regeneration of Channel View to life.”

Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “Our ambitious vision for the regeneration of Channel View will provide a more attractive environment and better connected local community, as well as delivering more affordable housing in an area of high demand”.

“These plans will revitalise the area and we are looking forward to working with Powell Dobson to deliver this exciting scheme, which is an integral part of our development strategy for 2,000 new council homes in Cardiff.”

Powell Dobson Architects will lead the design team which includes Blake Morgan Project Management, Cambria Consulting, McCann & Partners, Amity Planning and WYG Landscape.
